More WWI graves

Mr Cochrane and I went on a brilliant guided walk around Netley Military cemetery last Sunday. It's a beautiful place, especially on one of the wonderful Autumn days we've had recently.

As usual, it's the people and their stories which interested me more than dates and battle stats, and our guide was very good at bringing those out. I went round in my usual "choked up" state, especially when I saw gravestones like this:

Of course, plot bunnies are never far away. Not when you see memorials such as this one:

Is there some hidden meaning in "he tried to do his duty"? And who was Jack? I've not seen that sort of message from a comrade on a memorial before.
