Last night in Bristol

We had an event for I Do Two. So much to say about it, so incoherent...
  • Thanks to Bruin Fisher for organising it.
  • Thanks to Richard at the Old Market Tavern for being such a great host.
  • Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rigby22 for being such a star doing the financial transactions and enjoying all the attention, hugs and kisses from gay men. (Oh the bears were lovely and a particular Frenchman (he says he's the only gay Frenchman in Bristol) was lovelier still.
  • Thanks to all who came along and talked, supported and bought (including [livejournal.com profile] josephine_myles - always a pleasure to meet people in real life!)
  • We sold some books (always a good thing) and there's now a stock behind the bar so more still will sell.
  • Promo is easier with two - Bruin kept talking up my books and I talked up his story. So much easier than trying to find a way of saying 'Aren't my books great?' without cringing.

As a bookstore manager, I second the "it's better with two" opinion. When an author sits there alone, people are often nervous about approaching, afraid they'll find out the book "isn't for them" and then feel really awkward putting it back. I tend to position a staff member to walk up and chat a bit with the author when there's no one doing so already, so that people can come and take a peek without being centre stage.

On the rare and awesome two-author signings I've had, the duet always manages to entertain and chat with each other as well as those who approach, and it ends up making for a much better experience all around.

I think you've hit the nail on the head (several nails, several heads) - it just reduces the degree of awkwardness all round.

:)

I'm not at all sure I'd have been brave enough to do it without Charlie there, but with her it was relaxed and enjoyable. May 22nd we might be a team of no less than four if all goes well - Jamie Merrow, Sophia Deri-Bowen, Neil Plakcy and me. Should be a blast.

We made a good team. It'll be a different dynamic with the others but just as good (maybe better?)
