LIDAR images of New Forest

If you get a chance to go to this exhibition in Lyndhurst, it's well worth while. Fascinating LIDAR pictures, especially of Roman field systems underneath the A31.

Remote sensing has come on a bit since my day! All we had was magnetometers and resistivity. Mind you, I always avoided remote sensing, much preferred getting my hands dirty in the trench :)

What amazed me was where they picked up an iron age fort under a ring of trees! They also had false positives like a 'barrow' that turned out - on the ground - to be a kids' den. The Holmsley bee gardens were fabby, though.

I once spend a week excavating a barrow that turned out to be a tree hole :}
