Watched this last night. Mr Eastwood did a grand job with the story - so many layers, so much subtlety. Left plenty of scope for speculation about Hoover's relationship with Tolson (from Hoover's POV, at least) which could be interpreted to please either camp. Good performance by Di Caprio and by Hammer as poor, besotted Tolson.
There were scenes early on - of the FBI in action - which really smacked of 1930's starry eyed biopic. Only later did the rationale for that became clear - this was Hoover's highly romanticised and inaccurate version of events. Each of those scenes had been preluded (not right word, brain not functioning today) by a scene of him dictating a history of the FBI. Clever.
