Thanks to Stevie Carroll for the heads up on this story about WWII poet David Raikes. I also ran across a lovely piece about restoring the Welsh dragon at Mametz Wood.
I popped over to the churchyard to tidy Billy up today and was chatting to one of the chaps from church (87 year old, was a POW in WWII). He remembered Billy's funeral and knew the story. He said he'd been buried in our churchyard because that was where his parents used to sit when they came to the hospital and were waiting for visiting time to start. He hinted that the scandal had made them bury him away from home. Very poignant when he said something like, "They tried to make him a man. Perhaps they should have left him alone." Good to hear such sympathetic understanding.
