charlie_cochrane: (lessons for survivors)
Now available in print. It's for a good cause. (And who could resist a little touch of Jonty, Orlando, Dr. Panesar and Alan Turing?)
charlie_cochrane: (undeath)
Helen's another author I've met through Undeath and the Detective. I'm delighted to host her.

So, Helen. What got you writing?

One day a folklorist friend of mine complained to me that too many old family stories get forgotten. At once I thought of my father and his folk tales of Cornwall – the restoration of the fish to the village well, the capturing of the crows in a roofless enclosure (it’s called the Crowpound, and you can still visit it on Bodmin Moor) where they meekly remained, never to eat the crops again. My friend had no idea what she had just started. Ten years, one family history book and three novels later, I’m still writing.

I juggle my time between wrangling small children and proofreading PhD theses for Caltech. Sometimes I even understand some of them! The writing gets fitted in as and when I can manage it. Sadly, I’ve had little luck with any of my novels being published, but I am very proud to join Charlie in having a short story in Jess Faraday’s Undeath and the Detective. Constance and Conspiracy is a Regency mystery with a unique murder method and a victim who refuses to let her legacy die with her.

No-one knows what the future holds, but it’s a fair bet that mine is going to involve more writing. A couple of years ago a scene popped into my head – a father, going around a supermarket, buying food for his kids; somewhat at a loss, because his wife usually does the shopping. It all seems very ordinary – he’s trying to figure out how much fruit and veg he needs to buy for his kids to get their five a day. Then he goes to the pharmacy counter to pick up a prescription for valium, and he wonders, in passing, what would be the right dose for a child. Better not ask the pharmacist, he thinks; it’ll raise alarm bells. He’ll look it up online, later.

Why does he feel he might need to drug his children? Where is their mother? I’m still trying to figure all of that out. When I do, there’ll be another novel. Watch my website, www.helenangove.com, for more details.
