I didn't see it happen, being too busy here with the eating and the drinking and the sweeping of the house and all the rest. Especially after all the kerfuffle there was the day before. By the time the story got back to us I guess it had grown in the telling, made more exciting so it was worth more drinks. Hard to tell what was the real truth of the matter, because even the eye witnesses disagreed about what He'd actually done on the way to Golgotha or said while He was hanging there.

Had He really said that thief would be with Him in paradise, or told people not to weep for Him but for themselves? Sounds exactly like the sort of higgledy piggledy thing He would have done. That bit about Him asking God why He'd abandoned Him was pretty scary though. The blokes who reckon they know the scriptures had an explanation for it, of course, all off pat. I wasn't so sure; maybe it was in that nearness to death that He was most human, and really understood how hard it is sometimes when you haven't got all the power of the universe at your fingers.

One thing they don't have off pat, though, is what's going to happen next. I'm waiting.
