I came across Where the Poppies now grow when I was (as usual) arrived with masses of time to spare to deliver some training. I often have a look at the children's reading books, and this one stunned me. I went straight on my Christmas list and Santa brought it for me.

It's in the style of "The House that Jack Built", a cumulative rhyme, telling the story of two boys who play at soldiers and end up serving together in the trenches. I was convinced it would have a tearful end, which it did, but the tears were happy. I found it far more moving than some of the other WWI based stories I've come across - definite touch of "Strange Meeting". Ben and Ray are now two of my favourite fictional soldiers.
