Brought to you by Jonty Stewart, as Mrs Cochrane is too worked up over the rugby world cup to make any sense. By this time tomorrow, she’ll either be ecstatic or suicidal. Apparently there’s a big game in New Zealand that’ll determine whether England or Scotland (or both) make it through to the next round. I predict marital discord in both the Anglo-Scottish Cochrane household and at Forsythia Cottage.

News:

Charlie has been doing/have done quite a lot of blogging recently. You can keep up with her at her Live Journal or any of the places it feeds to (for example her Goodreads page) to see what she’s been blethering about. Her latest concerned some EM Forster gay short stories she didn’t know existed. (Forster’s a nice lad, if a bit earnest. We sometimes see him on King’s Parade looking even more serious than Orlando manages.)

Charlie is also at the Festival of Romance on the 22nd October, taking part in a panel on gay romance and MCing the session of authors reading the opening 150 words of their novels. She’ll need to take a whistle to cut off over-runners...

Keep an eye out next week for a little Cambridge Fellows freebie short story. Remember when we went on holiday to France? Orlando rather blotted his copybook, and is so embarrassed by the episode he hasn’t even told my mother about it.

Orlando Coppersmith’s expression as he picked up the post from the mat was what Jonty Stewart would have referred to—in his more colloquial moments—as a dead giveaway. He stood transfixed, turning the stiff, light green envelope over in his hands.

“From the Bailiffs, is it, Orlando? Or has the Vice-Chancellor found you out at last?”

“No.” Orlando passed the letter across. “It’s from France.”

“Oh.Oh. Do you want me to read it through before you look at it?”

Inspiration:

Charlie is the queen of avoiding having her picture taken. This is a rare snap of her and her eldest, on holiday, which is where she always gets inspired.

So good to hear from Jonty. Although the thought of writing to him in comments makes me feel quite shy...

Want me to come over and hide all the pointy objects until it's all decided? I haven't been following Pool B that closely - England need a bonus point to finish on top, don't they?

If we beat the Scots we should be Ok and on top - can't remember in re bonus points for the other outcomes. I feel sick just thinking of it.

I was trying to think of two teams I feel equal about in terms of both rugby and fitness matters.

In the interests of preventing marital strife I am happy to provide sanctuary / asylum to both Jonty and Mr C if necessary. Tea, sympathy and strong drink will be on tap as required ;)

Alas, having the two of us together wouldn't help, my dear. The Stewarts always shout for Scotland and the Coppersmiths shout for the Auld Enemy.

My dear chap! I'm afraid you've quite got the wrong end of the stick there. My invitation was intended for your good self and Mr Cochrane! All of us kindred spirits I believe. I suspect the other Mr C will be perfect company for Mrs Cochrane this weekend. I'll get the kettle on shall I? :)

I'm sorry. I was so overcome with emotion at the thought of the match, I misread your epistle.

Mrs C says that she would dread Mr C and I meeting up as we'd monopolise the conversation with St John's and St bride's and hostelries we've known.

Always nice to hear from you, Jonty. I'm looking forward to a new short story about your exploits although I can't help but wonder what exactly Orlando did to blot his copybook.

This probably isn't the time to mention that although I'm IN New Zealand, I'm not following the rugby in the slightest...

Mrs Cochrane can forgive you that, as long as you weren't one of the Antipodean ladies who voted for Mike Phillips as the best looking player.

You'll be horrified when you hear about Orlando!
