We were waiting the news here too. First words I heard from husband this morning-- him getting dressed, me wallowing in bed: "It is him-- Richard III"

I said "Oh, hmmm-- I thought it would be." But I hopped right up to see.

Daughter is getting ready for school right now. (She needs to hurry, or she will be late!) She said: "Oh, the poor man, his skeleton looks like a cube root graph!"

Looking at the skeleton, I am amazed that he was able to ride and fight, and act the tough virile king. He must have been in pain all the time. No wonder his painting has a sad face.

*nods* They were tough people. And interesting that it gives the lie to "all the stuff about his back was Tudor propaganda" line.

I keep thinking of Shakespeare's description of Henry V - a visage for war - and wonder if he knew about Henry's horrendous facial injuries.

So what happens to his remains now? Do they continue examining them? Do they need the consent of his descendants to do that? Does he get re-interred, but in Westminster Abbey this time? Whose decision is that if so? With what degree of ceremony? I just keep thinking of questions!

It's exciting, such an important historical figure being breaking news in 2013. Cool.

He's to be interred in Leicester Cathedral. Not sure about degree of ceremony, but implication is it'll be appropriate (it was covered in the news conference).

I have lots of questions, too, eg see Henry V comment above.

I was sitting in the hotel's lounge area this morning after the filk con and my Twitter feed exploded with the news - I squealed with joy, proclaimed the news to the other friends around, and later had a slight squee-fest with a few other enthusiasts. If I weren't so tired from driving home I'd still be bouncing.

In one of those great internet moments I was relaying info to a Richard III nut in Australia as she kept losing the newscast.

Isn't it fantastic? I am soooo thrilled that its him. I would love him to be buried in York Minster. (Of course I'm a tad biased being a York girl) He was Lord of the North..but I guess it'll be Westminster Abbey.

Now, if I'm ever in funds, I would love to go off in search of the final resting place of my own hero from that turbulent time..Antony Woodville.

It's Leicester Cathedral, as I understand it. I guess it's fitting as he's laid there a long time.

Where is Woodville reputed to be?

Ah I see. I missed that. He's been there 527 odd years so its fitting.

Antony Woodville and the others executed with him were flung into a communal grave at 'a nearby monestery'. Maybe Selby which is near Pontefract. I'd dearly love to know.

Oh, yes. Wouldn't that be something? And with these noble families there's always a good record of the blood line so DNA testing is possible.

I'm not one of the 'oh poor noble sainted Richard' camp because I don't think he'd have been able to do some of the things he did without a will of iron and a streak of ruthlessness, but I firmly believe he's got a raw deal in the press, so to speak. I'll be glued to the repeat of the TV show tonight. :)

I'm going to get that on the iplayer. I'm all Richarded out today. And yes, I agree on the old six of one half a dozen of the other when it comes to his reputation.

The whole Richard III thing is utterly fascinating! Reading about how he died is so - emotional is a good word for it.

It was awe-inspiring. I don't know much about all of this, but I've been amazed since reading about the discovery. I feel kind of mind boggled about it all. The picture of the skeleton was stunning.

Wasn't it? But it just begs more questions. There's a portrait of him which was cleary painted with shoulders the same height then painted over to show one higher. Which is clearly what he had. It's used of evidence of Tudor propaganda, but maybe it was setting the record straight?

It's all fascinating stuff. Not to mention that one of his headwounds was inflicted by a rondel dagger, thereby backing up my fiction about the death of Warwick the Kingmaker.
