My Romaniac mate Laura asked me to do a blog post about some of the perils of public speaking and facilitating conferences.

What are your tips for making public appearances go well? And do you want to pick my brains (such as they are) either here or there on the subject?

I've loved speaking in public ever since I won my first rosette for poetry recitation at the village eisteddfod aged 7 (I got 2nd place that year but most years after that I came 1st in my age group!) although over-confidence has sometimes tripped me up, and if anyone ever asked my for advice I'd say "make sure you at least skim-read the article before you start reading it out" - or you could end up like I did a few months back in church when the old testament reading *almost* featured "the High Priest of bloody hell, how do you say that word?"

ROFL. Oh yes. OT readings can be a nightmare. I remember doing one that was like reading Welsh.

You read aloud beautifully. Evidence Novel Openings last year. :)

Thanks. I put it down to it being taught in school (at the school eisteddfod there wasn't just Recitation competitions, there was a Public Speaking one where you were given the piece to read when you were on stage, had approx. 3-5 minutes to read through, and then had to deliver it) I was shocked when I started working in English schools and discovered (at least in the corner of Oxon & Bucks where I was) that it's not taught there since I consider it a valuable life skill...

PS if you need anyone to do any reading aloud this year I'm happy to help out, but from the programme it looked like you needed people for panels more which is not the sort of thing I'm good at yet

We're not having a reading aloud thing this year (doing a similar opener on cover art).

I'll rely on you for witty questions from the floor!
