Title: The memory of love's refrain
Book: The Charioteer
Rating: PG13
Disclaimer: I do not own these characters and make no profit from them.
Challenge & Prompt: For the 2014 Valentine Challenge. My inspiration, Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust.
Andrew wandered down the lane; further away, literally and figuratively, with every step, as if that first kiss, tasted in the golden sunset, had been forbidden fruit. Laurie turned, to see if fiery swords prevented his return to limbo.
No, something wasn’t right here...
“Laurie.” Ralph’s voice an urgent whisper. “Are you all right?”
“I think so,” Laurie replied, coming to. “Just a dream.”
“Dunkirk again?”
“No. Not a nightmare this time. Just one of those where everything gets muddled. I’ll be fine.”
Ralph drew him closer. The night had grown cold and Laurie had thrown the cover off. “Shall I make you a cup of tea?”
“No.” Tea would mean talking. “Just stay here. Both of us need our beauty sleep.”
“As if you ever did.” Ralph kissed the top of his head.
Laurie shut his eyes, warm in the loving embrace which surrounded him. He’d stopped feeling guilty about the love which Ralph lavished on him; he returned the affection as best he could, but it wasn’t the same. That was what he saved for Andrew, the stardust of what only seemed like yesterday, even though it was three years since they’d last spoken. That time could run to a hundred years and Laurie would still feel the same as he had at the time of their first meeting.
That piece of Mozart they’d never listened to—Laurie couldn’t bear to hear it now.
The memory of love's refrain.
