Delighted to have Mychael here today. She'll answer to either Katherine or Mychael, and is a mother, student, author by trade, and editor by compulsion. She's been in the publishing business for several years. and isa proud bibliophile, to which her poor sagging bookcases can attest. She's also a self-proclaimed, thirty-something year old Spongebob Squarepants addict. Catch her at her blog.
What inspired you to start writing?
I've been writing for most of my life. I think my very first short story was a page long and I have NO idea what it was about now. Something interesting to a first-grader, most likely. LOL Professionally, that kind of happened by accident. I can't imagine doing anything else at this point.
Do you have another job (paid or otherwise) apart from being an author? If so, how do you juggle your time?
Not unless you count being an editor. I've been one off and on for years. Right now, I'm working for JMS Books and just became the Editor-in-Chief for Rooster & Pig Publishing. I also do freelance editing on the side. There isn't a whole lot of juggling, really. Writing is my primary job, but the two things are quite compatible. I think being an editor has helped me become a better writer.
What did it feel like watching your first book fledge and leave the nest?
Nerve-wracking, nauseating, euphoric... LOL I started doing this in 2005, and I still get ungodly nervous before a new book comes out. I still get nervous when I submit a new story to a publisher--even one I've worked with for years.
Are you character or plot driven? What do you do if one of your characters starts developing at a tangent?
Definitely character-driven. My guys are notorious for taking control and surprising me. At this point, I'd be worried it they didn't do it. O.o
If you were in a tight corner and had to rely on one of your characters to save you, which would it be and why?
Hm... Lucca Moretti, probably. He's a temperamental ass (according to his twin brother), but he's strong, a vampire, and a witch--all rolled into one hot body.
If you had no constraints of time and a guarantee of publication, what book would you write?
The world's greatest, grandest high fantasy epic with openly gay heroes. I love writing fantasy, but sometimes my inner critic gets in the way.
Is there a classic book you started and simply couldn't finish?
Can't honestly think of one. Even if I have to go back to it much, much later, I do my damnedest to finish a book I take the time to start reading.
What’s your favourite gay romance/other genre book? And why?
Fantasy. I devour fantasies, especially ones with gay heroes. I fell in love with fantasies as a kid, and I now hunt everywhere for new stories with the guys I want to read about, ones I can relate to on a personal level.
What's your next project?
Jeez. What isn't my next project? LOL I have four books in the works right now: Demons of Candlewood (paranormal, sequel to The Candlewood Wraith), Citadel 1: Winter's Madness (new fantasy series), Shadowkings 2: Harbinger (paranormal/quasi-historical/fantasy, book 2 in Shadowkings series), and DungeonCrawl 1: Loading, Please Wait (new gaming-theme series).
