And very good it looks, too. So easy to forget how many people started to come to prominence in this play - Kenny, Rupert, Colin et al. I'd have loved to see the 1981 production.

Do scroll down and read the Daily Mail's typically dim opinion. That rag sounds increasingly like a pastiche of itself.

I'm now convinced the Daily Mail has been taken over by satirists who are just seeing how far they can go before everyone realises. (Though given how many people fall for stories in The Onion and similar, that could be a long way.)

That's an interesting theory - nothing I've seen recently in the mail would contradict it.

I had the great pleasure of sitting and chatting with Julian Mitchell for a couple of hours last month while he examined the records we have of Rudolph Hess's stay here. He was telling me how excited he was that the play is being revived. Such a lovely man. I'd love to go and see the play.

I saw it on the West End in 1983. Does that count?

It does indeed. Am dead jealous. Daniel Day Lewis?

No, James Newall was playing Tommy Judd by the time I saw it. We wrote to each other for years, because we met after the show and found out that we were sort of cousins, since we were both members of the Farquharson clan.

Oh, and there was a young man playing Guy Bennett then...what was his name? Colin Firth? (Yes, THAT Colin Firth. He would have been twenty-two going on twenty-three that summer. And he was brilliant and funny and heartbreaking.)

I wish it would come on tour. It won't. :(
