Today was the annual Bishop of Winchester's tea for Chairs of Governors and Headteachers of church schools. Normally we wear our posh frocks/summer suits and have to sit under the tree out of the sun. This year it was jumpers, socks under boots and everyone in the marquee. But the cakes were great, the tea strong and the company interesting.
This will be the last one I attend as I'm stepping down as a governor after twenty three years of service, many of them as Chair. So I was a bit miffed to hear that the theme for next academic year's Diocese work with schools will be Holocaust remembrance and I'll miss out. As the speaker said, in the context of a world where extreme right wing supporters are becoming more vocal and Holocaust deniers are on the increase, "If we can change the attitude of just one person by doing this, it's worthwhile."
As a minimum they want all church schools to say the Holocaust day memorial prayer and there'll be support to do much more. I may not be involved but I'll be championing it.
