1. What was the first fic you ever wrote?
A dreadful, slashy, elves and heroes sort of thing when I was a teenager.
2. What's your most recent work?
The most recent published one is Aftermath, in the trilogy Speak Its Name.
3. What do you think you're best at (genre, style, theme)?
Slightly humorous romance with an element of mystery thrown in.
4. What would you like to be better at?
Self promotion. I hate having to blow my own trumpet.
5. Which of your works do you think best represents you as a writer/artist?
Professionally, the Cambridge Fellows series (coming soon). In fanfic, at
mylodon, the Regeneration stories as I can let my ingenuity and imagination run riot.
6. What's your favourite story you've ever written (picture you've ever drawn etc)?
I honestly don’t think I have a favourite. Very fond of my Cambridge boys, Orlando and Jonty, though, so anything with them.
7. What's your favourite scene/chapter you've ever written?
Professionally, a scene where Jonty gets the flu and Orlando has to nurse him. In fanfic, Jack Harkness trying to seduce Archie Kennedy.
8. What's your favourite passage or line you've ever written?
From the upcoming Cambridge Fellows Mystery book:
“I’d begun to think that I would never again get you alone, Orlando. If there’s a knock on the door this afternoon I won’t open it, not if it were the King himself to offer me a place on the Privy Council. Edward, old man I’d say and he’d reply Yes Jonathan, old cock? because he is really very down to earth, Orlando. Did you know that my father used to be taken to play with the royal family as a child and he always says that the Prince, as he was then, was such a caution and—what was I saying?” The fourth glass of Black Velvet on a stomach that had lunched on only a few savory biscuits had been a complete mistake. They’d been given large glasses, their hosts proving exceedingly generous. Stewart had reached a rare state of elation for a man who was notoriously good at holding his drink. He repeated, “Orlando, what was I saying?”
9. Have you ever written/drawn something that you found really upsetting, that you almost couldn't bring yourself to write/draw?
*g* I have terrible trouble with intimate scnes. I can write them (and I hope they’re good) but it’s a real “Grit your teeth and think of England” time.
10. Which (if any) of your works represents a departure from your usual style, you taking a risk and trying something new? Do you think it worked?
I have a modern day romance/mystery that’s a work in progress. It feels really odd to be working in a contemporary time.
And anything serious – I have a piece of fanfic soon to post which is set in Arromanches and is very sombre.
11. Who's your favourite character to write/draw? Who do you think you write/draw best?
In my books, the minor characters like Ariadne Peters or Jonty’s mum. In fanfic, Archie Kennedy.
12. Name five things that typically characterize your work.
Banter. Esoteric references. A sense of what I call ‘black and white movie land’. Characters who have a real appreciation of right and wrong. Humour.
13. List the projects you're working on right now or have coming up in the near future.
The Cambridge Fellow Mystery series, which will keep me busy the next couple of years. And there are always lots of other stories bubbling away on the back of the hob.
14. How do you think your writing/art has changed since you first started (in the fandom specifically, for those of you who do this for a living too)?
I hope it’s got a lot better. Less mannered, more inspired.
15. Describe yourself as a writer/artist in five words or less.
I write what I ‘see’.
16. Links to any archives or websites where you have your work.
charliecochrane, an occasional blog at http://historicromance.wordpress.com/ and a website coming soon at www.charliecochrane.co.uk.

Date: 2008-08-22 02:59 pm (UTC)I tried to be honest although, as you know, I find it hard to really 'think' about these things. Looking forward to your answers.
