At a time when the news (and some social media sites) is dominated by people treating each other with something far from kindness, I was heartened to see, in a bitterly cold Southampton today, a young couple taking coffees to homeless people. I made a point of telling them that seeing their actions had heartened me.

Indeed. My Sally was in town too and said she heard someone offering to get one of the homeless chaps a sandwich.

I know. I could never have done that (too scared, too clumsy) which makes me admire them even more.

I've had a couple of occasions this year when I've had to scrounge coffee money off colleagues at work, after accidentally giving all my change to a homeless girl with a dog that I stopped to talk to the previous night. Buying coffee for people would seem like the ideal way to cut out the middleman.

On the other hand, my little gang of Big Issue sellers took good care of me from time to time when I was in Edinburgh so I always try to pay that one forward in whatever way I can.

I remember Rabbi Lionel Blue saying he always carried chocolate bars to give homeless people because you couldn't be sure what the money got spent on.

I've known people come out on a bad day and busk just long enough to raise the money for dog food, but if I'm close to an open shop, I've sometimes gone in and got something human and dog can share to save them from having to briefly split up in order to spend the money themselves.

I could do more, but I need to get my own house sorted first.

No need to feel guilty about looking after yourself sometimes!
